Cohen Pleads in Kiddie Porn Case

Posted By Bob Ingle On April 12, 2010 @ 11:07 am

Today, former Assemblyman Neil Cohen, 59, pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography from a state computer in the office he shared with two other lawmakers from Union County. Cohen, who served in the Legislature for 17 years, could get five years with final sentencing set for July 12. The plea agreement means Cohen must register under Megan’s Law and is restricted from using social networking websites. Cohen could also be barred from public employment and may be supervised by the Parole Board for life after release from prison. Published reports at the time said a legislative staffer.

Ray Lesniak found the photos and reported it to Cohen’s office mates — Sen. Ray Lesniak and Assemblyman Joseph Cryan. Reportedly they didn’t go to police first but to the Legislature’s lawyer although Cryan is a deputy sheriff in Union County. When the news broke, the Star-Ledger interviewed Lesniak and Cryan:

“Both of us have known Neil Cohen for more than two decades,” Lesniak and Cryan said. “We know him as a compassionate, caring individual but if the allegations prove true, clearly there was a side to him neither of us knew. We have been instructed to not make any further comments regarding this very serious matter.”

Cohen resigned and five months later was indicted. Cohen was a deputy majority leader until his resignation. He and fellow Legislature member Nia Gill had a law office.

When Attorney General Anne Milgram announced the indictment she said, “He contributed to the exploitation of children and he betrayed the trust placed in him by the people of his district and by the people of the state of New Jersey.”
