‘Oprah’ Stations Break TV Condom Ad Ban – Finally, It is the 21st Century, Right??

By: AIDS Healthcare Foundation

Los Angeles, CA – November 12, 2010

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), which operates the largest community-based alternative HIV and sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing program in California, conducting more that 50,000 tests annually, will host a press teleconference Monday, November 15th at 9:30 am Pacific Time to announce that is has broken the ‘latex barrier’ with its placement of an AHF-produced safer sex/condom use public service announcement (PSA) on network stations airing the ‘Oprah’ talk show in the Los Angeles and Washington, DC television markets. The 60 second TV spot, titled, ‘This is Real Talk,’ will run during the daytime starting Monday in Los Angeles (‘Oprah’ airs from 3pm to 4pm Pacific Time, KABC-TV7) and in Washington, DC (WJLA-TV7, 4pm to 5pm Eastern Time). It will also run on FOX-TV’s prime time ‘Family Guy’ in Los Angeles (KTTV-FOX11 Sunday November 21st, 9pm Pacific), which blacklisted a similar heartfelt AHF public health message promoting condom use from airing on the network’s popular off-color cartoon sitcom last year.

“We are excited that our latest television ad promoting safer sex and condom use has broken a ‘latex barrier’ by being accepted to run on both ‘Oprah’ during key afternoon time slots in Los Angeles and Washington as well as on FOX-TV’s popular prime time cartoon ‘Family Guy,’ which only last year refused to run a similar paid public service announcement of ours promoting condom use,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “Oprah has been a leader in examining evolving boundaries in society and she’s been willing to challenge the status quo both on her program and in her life. It is an honor for us that her viewers will be among the first to see this important public health message which unfolds as a snapshot of conversation between a father and son.”

In Kitty Kelley’s 2010 book ‘Oprah: A Biography,’ Kelley noted that Oprah, “…told the story of AIDS in several different shows, including one about whether the networks should run commercials advertising the use of a certain brand of condom as protection against AIDS. Despite those in her audience vehemently opposed to such advertising, Oprah announced that she was handing out free samples of “safe-sex kits” that included condoms.”

‘This is Real Talk,’ features a father and his 17 year-old son, Dan. The action unfolds as Dan, rushing from the house, pivots to borrow the car keys from his dad, who offers both advice—real talk—and some condoms to Dan’s somewhat bewildered embarrassment. As his father then advises him to be careful and not to be late, Dan agrees, pausing to say a genuine, “thanks dad.”

AHF’s ‘This is Real Talk,’ PSA was also submitted for approval for airing on a number of other primetime and daytime programs in Los Angeles. All stations agreed the spot was suitable to air, although some stations stipulated that the spot could only run in certain dayparts, such as after 9pm or 10pm.

Regarding the successful placement of the ‘This is Real Talk’ PSA on ‘Family Guy,’ in February 2009, FOX rejected a similar safer sex/condom use public service announcement produced by AHF and featuring actress/activist Sheryl Lee Ralph. That rejection surprised AHF officials, given the amount of sexual content found on FOX’s entertainment program lineup including ‘Family Guy.’ At the time, AHF also submitted the television spot to The Los Angeles Time Warner Cable group to review the spot for the following networks: MSNBC, CNN, MTV, Lifetime, BET and TBS. They approved the spot for airing in any daypart on all stations.
