Hackers placed a pornographic image on the Super Bowl Host Committee’s website just hours before kickoff on Feb. 5, officials confirmed.

“It’s unfortunate that somebody with such malintent would do something like this,” said Dianna Boyce, communications director for the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee. Boyce said the image was removed in “a matter of moments” from the site, www.indianapolissuperbowl.com.

Visitor John McNally said he believed the image was on the committee’s site for about 15 minutes. The headline on the image, he said, was ‘free hotdogs.’”

“I was trying to find what time the stadium opened and I was looking down at the bottom links when the picture flashed across the top,” said McNally, 43, the owner of a computer software consulting firm in Leesburg, Va. “There were pictures of happy people at the NFL Experience, happy people on the zipline, then ‘free hotdogs.’” McNally said he and his friend Tim Walsh relied heavily on the host committee’s website during their stay in Indianapolis. The site was full of information about bands, parties and activities, he said. “I was trying to figure out a way of notifying them so they could pull it down,” McNally said. “By the time I figured it out, it was already fixed.”

The Indianapolis Star obtained a copy of the image that shows it was visible on the site at 11:51 a.m. on Feb. 5. Super Bowl 46 kicked off at 6:30 p.m.

The committee did not know who placed the image on the site, Boyce said, but they notified federal authorities about the security breach. FBI spokeswoman Special Agent Wendy Osborne said the case had been referred to the agency’s cyber crime experts.

Boyce said the site does not keep sensitive or personal information such as credit card or social security numbers.
