SAFETY: Tinder Ends Squabble with AIDS Healthcare Foundation by Adding STD Testing Center Locator

Alexandra Mayers aka Monica Foster commentary: All the AHF wants is to stop the spread of disease via education and awareness…and that’s not a bad thing at all.

The Monitor Daily (U.S.) – Tinder ends squabble with the Aids Healthcare Foundation as months of discussions led to a mutually beneficial agreement. Last year, the Aids Healthcare Foundation put up a series of rather unflattering billboards targeting dating sites Tinder and Grindr. The billboards were placed in key locations around Los Angeles and New York City.

tinderIn case you missed them, the unflattering billboards suggested a direct link between dating sites Tinder and Grindr and an uptick in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The ‘classy’ chlamydia could be seen hooking up with attractive Tinder, while a human figure bearing the label syphilis got a bit too close to Grindr. The Aids Healthcare Foundation campaign against the dating websites might have been encouraged by last year’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report outlining the uptick in sexually transmitted diseases.

Understandably, the two dating sites were vocal about the billboards threatening a flourishing business. As a response, Tinder sent the Aids Healthcare Foundation a cease and desist letter stating that the malicious billboards presented:

“unprovoked and wholly unsubstantiated accusations…made to irreparably damage Tinder’s reputation”.

Thus, the squabble began. After months of bickering and public statements from both sides, Tinder ends squabble with the Aids Healthcare Foundation. The compromise is for the latter to take down the unflattering billboards, while the former party in the deal implemented a new feature on the dating site.

Basically, Sean Rad – Tinder CEO agreed for the dating site to include an STDs testing center locator. That’s big news, isn’t it? Although motivation on both sides may be questionable, offering Tinder users the possibility to locate the nearest STDs testing center isn’t too far fetched.

While we can agree that the Aids Healthcare Foundation’s advertising campaign was aggressive, the more support is harnessed for sexual health and sexual education, the better. Tinder and other dating sites may not be directly linked to an increasing rate of sexually transmitted diseases. Nonetheless, sexual health should be a priority regardless of the setting. Whether one finds their pair online or offline, STDs and the associated stigma are still a problem. Encouraging testing and prevention is never a bad idea.

As such, the month-long discussions conclude as Tinder ends squabble with the Aids Healthcare Foundation with an agreement bound to benefit all parties involved. The Aids Healthcare Foundation got Tinder to include an STDs testing center locator. Tinder users have a readily available tool in the  STDs testing center locator.

Where is the new Tinder feature found? When you tap Support, a new menu surfaces. Scrolling to the bottom, you will find a “Health Safety” link. Click on the link and the STDs testing center locator is right there.
